PainRelief.com:  What is the background for this study?

Response: Many people consider vaping as just nicotine vaping, but these vaping devices can be used to vape cannabis as well. We are curious about how many e-cigarette users are vaping cannabis. Using the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study from 2018 to 2019, we investigated the proportion of current (past 30-day) e-cigarette users (ages 12-24) who vaped cannabis and their frequency of cannabis vaping.

PainRelief.com:  What are the main findings?

Response: Among current e-cigarette users, the prevalence of cannabis vaping was 35.0% (95% CI, 29.3%-41.2%) in youths aged 12-14 years, 51.3% (95% CI, 47.7%-54.9%) in youths aged 15-17, and 54.6% (95% CI, 52.5%-56.7%) in young adults aged 18-24.

PainRelief.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: Many adolescents and young adults who use e-cigarettes are vaping cannabis. Some of them are vaping cannabis exclusively.

PainRelief.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: Future surveys should add detailed questions on nicotine and cannabis vaping, including the substance being vaped and the frequency/intensity of use. In addition, these surveys could examine some other substances that are being vaped, such as opium and cocaine.
