Pain Relief from Osteoarthritis Achieved Through Digital and Face-to-Face Interventions

PainRelief.com: What are the main findings?

Response: The main findings are that people with hip or knee OA experienced clinically relevant improvements in pain after participating in first-line intervention, whether delivered face-to-face or digitally. Participants in the digitally delivered intervention experienced a larger estimated improvement at 3 months. However, this increased benefit was of uncertain clinical importance.

PainRelief.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: That it is possible to reach a clinically relevant pain reduction after participating in first-line intervention, irrespective of delivery mode (digitally OR face-to-face). If we deliver first-line intervention in different ways and let people with OA choose which intervention they prefer we will have the possibility to reach a wider population of OA.

PainRelief.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Response: In the future, we need to study which patient responds to which treatment and evaluate factors associated with  intervention preference.

PainRelief.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Any disclosures?

Response: By providing both face-to-face and digital treatments, we may be able to deliver first-line treatment for OA to more persons, facilitate shared decision-making in the choice of treatment, and thereby increase the chance of successful treatment outcome.

Disclosures: Dr Jönsson is the director of the Better Management of Patients with Osteoarthritis registry. Dr Lohmander is receiving consulting fee from Arthro Terapeutics outside the submitted work.
