Real World Study Evaluates Medical Cannabis for Cancer Pain Relief

PainRelief.com:  What are the main findings?

Response: We found that for most patients, pain measures improved significantly, other cancer-related symptoms such as anxiety and depression decreased and the consumption of painkillers was also reduced. We also monitored for unwanted side effects that might have come up from the medical cannabis itself, none were severe, and all remained stable during the study period.

PainRelief.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: Our findings inform how a relatively high number of oncology patients experienced medical cannabis treatment over a long period of time in a real-world context. Medical cannabis treatment is generally safe for oncology patients, most outcomes improved, with less pain and cancer-related symptoms.

PainRelief.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: Although our study was very comprehensive and presented additional perspectives on medical cannabis, the heterogeneity of the cancer patients in oncological treatments, cancer types and the stage of the cancer was extensive. Thus, future studies should investigate specific subgroups with more shared characteristics.

PainRelief.com: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Response: Despite medical cannabis having great therapeutic potential, the use of the plant for medical purposes is limited. As our understanding of the plant grows, so does the exceptional benefit we can achieve by using it to improve human health.
